DACS Artist’s Resale Right member, Rose Wylie, has been awarded the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize 2014. She follows in the footsteps of previous winners Peter Blake and David Hockney.
Award-winning painting on show until 30 November
Rose Wylie was awarded
the coveted £25,000 prize at an awards ceremony at Walker Art Gallery, as part of
Liverpool Biennial.
She is the 29th winner of the award, following in the footsteps of artists including Sarah Pickstone, Peter Doig, David Hockney and Peter Blake.
Rose Wylie's paintings have attracted widespread recognition over the past few years. In 2011 she won the Paul Hamlyn Award for Visual Art and had her first retrospective at the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings in 2012. She was first shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize in 1991.
Her winning painting,
PV Windows and Floorboards, depicts characterful figures at a private view of an exhibition.
Talking about her artistic process, she says:
“The paintings often start from my drawings, but anything can change, depending on the way I feel about how it is, or if I know what that should be. The drawings can come from the excitement of anything I’ve seen, but particularly from film (the swapping of one artform from another), newspapers, and memory of personal events.”
The award-winning painting is currently on view at Walker Art Gallery until 30 November 2014. The exhibition includes entries by fellow DACS members including Nicholas Middleton amnd Emma Puntis.
