DACS to speak at international Artist’s Resale Right conference in Geneva

Representatives from DACS, with member, Richard Wentworth, will be speaking at a major international conference on the Artist’s Resale Right at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva, on Friday 28 April 2017.

Discussing the benefits of ARR for artists across the world

Bringing together high level policy-makers, artists, art market representatives and collective management societies such as DACS, the conference will discuss the international adoption of the Artist’s Resale Right (ARR) – a right which entitles visual artists to a royalty when their copyright-protected work resells on the art market.

Discussing its economic impact and importance in supporting the livelihoods of artists, it is a chance to promote a better understanding of the issues involved with the application of ARR on a global scale, as well as provide a platform for artists to express their expectations. ARR currently exists in over 80 countries worldwide, but artists are losing out in countries where the right doesn’t exist.

We are delighted to be taking part. DACS member Richard Wentworth will talk about the importance of ARR from an artist’s point of view; Mark Stephens, DACS’ Chair, is to provide a keynote address on the implementation of ARR; and Daniel Rudd, Head of Artists’ Services, will talk about the practicalities of administering the right.

"Levelling the playing field across the global art market"

Gilane Tawadros, Chief Executive at DACS, said: “Introducing an international treaty on the Artist’s Resale Right would level the playing field across the global contemporary art market, to ensure a fair balance of trade and most importantly benefit all artists across the globe wherever their work is sold.”

The event takes place ahead of the next WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR), following a proposal from Senegal and Congo to make ARR a part of the permanent agenda in future sessions – an important milestone in the campaign for an international treaty on the right.

    ARR in the UK

ARR was implemented into UK law in 2006 and extended in 2012 so that the beneficiaries of deceased artists can also benefit from royalties. Since its introduction, DACS has paid over £50 million in royalties to 4,000 artists and estates.
