DACS’ Annual Review 2013 shows growth in payments to visual artists

DACS has published its Annual Review 2013. Building on the successes of previous years, the organisation continues to grow and evolve, with more artists and estates benefitting from royalties than ever before.

19,000 artists receive over £14 million in royalties

In 2013, we paid a total of over £14 million in royalties to over 19,000 visual artists and estates through Copyright Licensing, the Artist’s Resale Right and Payback.

We paid £1.5 million to over 1,000 artists and estates through Copyright Licensing; £8.4 million in Artist’s Resale Right royalties to over 1,400 artists and estates; and £4.2 million to a record 16,700 artists and estates through Payback.

The royalties contribute significantly to the incomes of artists and estates, enabling them to sustain and develop their practices, and contribute to the UK’s creative economy as a whole.

Artists given greater say in DACS’ decisions

In addition to securing royalties for visual artists, last year saw us consult with our members on some proposed changes which would democratise the way we are run. The supportive feedback we received led us to formally adopt a new governance structure which gives artists a greater voice in our decision-making process.

We are increasing the representation of artists and estates on our Board, by recruiting three new Directors from our Copyright Licensing, Artist's Resale Right and Payback membership.

This year, Copyright Licensing members - who mandate us to manage their most significant economic and moral rights – will also be able to vote on some key issues at our first AGM in 10 years, on 3 September 2014.

Furthermore, we continued to campaign to safeguard the rights of artists, taking part in Government consultations on copyright, extended collective licensing and the Artist’s Resale Right with welcomed input from artists and estates.

We also laid the necessary foundations for this year’s thirtieth anniversary, an important milestone in our 30 year history. This year, we launched Artimage, our online image licensing resource dedicated to modern and contemporary art, and announced a new charitable arm, The DACS Foundation – both of which develop our longstanding mission to transform the financial landscape for artists and their heirs.
