Publications and Research

DACS often commissions research into the financial landscape for visual artists to identify new ways to support their practice. Read about our recent projects below.
Knowledge Exchange Studentship
From 2015 until 2018, DACS is supporting a Knowledge Exchange Studentship in partnership with the
Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and
The Ruskin School of Art.
Laura Molloy, who was selected for the studentship, will investigate the artistic and economic value of the internet in UK visual arts practice, with a focus on digital curation and digital literacy skills.

The New Economy of Art
In 2014-15, DACS partnered with
Artquest on a publication and debate series called
The New Economy of Art.
Presenting a series of different perspectives from artists, economists, critics, academics, art dealers and art curators on the financial and business models adopted in both the public and private sectors of the UK art world, this publication and its specially
curated debates explore the impact these systems have on individual artists and their work, through value to patronage to new and emerging business models.
The New Economy of Art includes texts by Louisa Buck, writer and broadcaster; Alan Freeman, economist; John Kieffer, writer and arts policy advisor; as well as specially commissioned interventions from artists Sonia Boyce, Jeremy Deller and Barbara Steveni.
The book is available to purchase at £14.99, plus postage and packaging. To order your copy, please email
[email protected].
Artist salary research
In 2011, DACS commissioned the
Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management (CIPPM) at Bournemouth University to research the average earnings of fine artists, photographers, illustrators and designers in the UK.
