Royalties for visual artists with published artistic works
Each year, we pay artists and estates
Payback royalties for the re-use of their copyright-protected work in UK books, magazines and TV programmes.
The royalties come from a range of collective licensing schemes – such as the
Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA), who operate a scheme which sells photocopying and scanning licences to businesses. We distribute a share of the revenue to visual artists, ensuring they are remunerated when their published work is reproduced.

DACS the UK’s leading representative of visual artists for collective licensing
Visual artists claiming through DACS will receive £4 million in Payback royalties in 2017, which includes almost 90% of the total royalties available to visual artists from the CLA.
This follows our introduction of a
new timeline and claim process for Payback because of
changes in the collective licensing industry over the past couple of years.

Safeguarding artists’ revenue streams is our number one priority and we will continue to ensure that artists and estates get their fair share of royalties going forward.”
Over a third of claimants set to see their payment ‘topped up’
Overall, individual royalty payments for work published in UK books and magazines range from £25 to £550, with the median payment £150. While the highest payment for work published in books and magazines and broadcast on TV was £5400.
For the first time in 2017, claimants also had the opportunity to submit all of their publication history data to be eligible to claim from a distinct royalty pot, worth 10% of the overall share of royalties for all visual artists. As a result, over 12,000 claimants will see their royalties ‘topped up’ after their publication history data was matched with the CLA’s photocopying data.
Out of all the visual representative organisations submitting publication history data on behalf of their members, DACS received over 70% of the money available from the CLA, which we will be distributing to claimants with successful matches.

Payback will be open for applications once again at the beginning of 2018. We will contact you towards the end of this year with more details.
As previously announced, the CLA is gradually introducing a more data-led approach to distributing collective licensing revenue. Next year, 15% of the overall share of royalties for visual artists will be allocated to claimants whose publication history is matched with the CLA’s photocopying data.
