DACS is hosting a panel discussion, 2pm, Saturday 6 December 2014, in partnership with the ICA, London, to explore the conceptual, ethical and practical issues that determine an artist’s legacy. Tickets are from £7.
What is an artist’s legacy and who looks after it?
The Artist, The Artwork, The Guardian and The Legacy will bring together a range of perspectives from curators, artists, artists’ estates and lawyers to discuss how an artist’s legacy is safeguarded, how artworks are defined and cared for, and how private and public interests determine an artist’s legacy.
The panel will be chaired by our Chief Executive Gilane Tawadros and art law specialist Daniel McClean. Speakers include Matthew Arnatt, Achim Borchardt-Hume, Guy Brett, Mark Francis, Mary Moore and Barry Rosen.
The panel will discuss questions regarding who is the rightful guardian of an artist’s legacy: is it the family and heirs of the artist or those who manage the artist’s estate, or is it the institutions who safeguard the work and its critical context? In addition, speakers will addresses the question of audience: for whom is an artist’s legacy preserved and what claims does this audience have on the artist’s legacy.
