Campaign to save artists' workspaces

SPACE Studios in London has launched an e-petition to save artists’ workspaces from being converted into residential properties.

Under new proposals, the Government wants to relax planning requirements so that developers can convert office premises to residential properties without needing planning permission.

While there is no guarantee that this housing will be affordable, an unintended consequence of this move could see many artists, designers, and creative industry businesses forced out of their workspace.

Some local authorities are now seeking exemption from this initiative, which they believe will have a negative impact on communities and local economies. Many business locations would be adversely affected, particularly in areas coveted as residential locations. Businesses would be potentially forced to relocate or close with a loss of jobs. There are likely to be no replacement buildings available if these go to housing.

If you would like to show your support then you sign Space's e-petition and forward it to your contacts.
