Rencontres d’Arles photography festival kicks off this week

The prestigious Les Rencontres d’Arles photography festival kicked off this week on 1 July and will showcase new work by contemporary photographers from all over the world until 22 September.

Stezaker and Tillmans among highlights at Arles

Now in its 43rd year, the annual summer photography festival in Arles, southern France, has earned an international reputation for showcasing mostly new, unpublished works by contemporary photographers from across the world.

Every year it presents over 60 exhibitions in beautiful heritage sites, featuring established names alongside less familiar new artists.

This year’s theme is ‘black’ and participating photographers and curators are invited to consider the place that black and white photography holds today.

A number of notable DACS artists are exhibiting - among them are:
    • John Stezaker – recent works from his ongoing collage series, the Third Person Series and a new venture into film loops
    • Wolfgang Tillmans – a new series of works entitled New World, alongside the ongoing Silver series
DACS artist Patrick Tosani has guest-curated a show featuring over 600 images from the Centre National des Arts Plastiques’ photographic archive. The exhibition is entitled Images like birds.

During the festival the annual Rencontres d’Arles Awards for new artists will also be announced. Leading curators from around the world have nominated and this year, DACS artist Clare Strand is in the running to win a prize.
