New exhibition on British painter LS Lowry now open at Tate Britain

A major new exhibition on DACS-represented British painter LS Lowry (1887-1976) is now open at London’s Tate Britain, running until 20 October 2013.

    Painter of modern British life

Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life is the first major exhibition of Lowry’s work at a public institution in London since his death in 1976.

Focussing on his famous paintings of everyday urban life and physical landscapes during the industrial age it seeks to reposition him in the art history canon, arguing for his pre-eminence as Britain’s painter of modern life.

The show features over 90 works, including paintings from Tate’s own collection such as The Pond (1950) and Coming Out of School (1927), alongside major new loans.

The influence of Lowry’s tutor, the late French impressionist Adolphe Valette, is also highlighted with parallels drawn to nineteenth-century French painters of modern life Vincent van Gogh and Camille Pissarro.
