A fashion story set amid Iceland’s glacial landscapes has earned Danish-born, London-based photographer Klaus Thymann ‘Professional Fashion & Beauty Photographer of the Year’ at the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards.
The shoot, for legendary British fashion title, i-D follows an adventurer as he explores a series of remote glaciers around Iceland. In a departure from elaborate, heavily stage managed fashion stories, it was shot entirely with available light, amid natural surrounding with no sets or props.
Parts of the series were shot on the shores of Jokulsarlon glacier lake, while others feature the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier as dramatic backdrop. It’s familiar territory for Thymann, who since 2008 has photographed some of the world’s most remote glaciers as part of his not-for-profit glacier archive initiative, Project Pressure.
The winning photographs, alongside other images from the awards, will be on show at Somerset House in London from 26 April – 12 May and published in the 2013 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards book.
Klaus Thymann is one of the world’s leading fashion and advertising photographers. He is the founder of Project Pressure, a not-for-profit initiative documenting the world's retreating glacier and he also sits on DACS’ Board advocating for artists’ rights.
The Sony World Photography Awards, organised by the World Photography Organisation, drew 122,000 submissions from 170 countries. The jury was chaired by Catherine Meyerhoff, Director of Special Projects at Magnum Photos, and made up of photography experts from across the world.
