    What is Payback?

Payback is our annual payment of royalties to visual artists and the beneficiaries of deceased artists with copyright-protected artwork in UK books, magazines and TV programmes.

We collect these royalties from “collective licensing schemes” which require organisations to purchase annual licences allowing them to photocopy and scan publications, or record TV programmes, without breaching anyone’s copyright - for example, when photocopying an image of an artwork in a book.

This year we have over £4 million in royalties to pay to artists and beneficiaries. Last year the average royalty was £235. All eligible claimants get a minimum of £25.
