James O Jenkins: Why I'm signed up to Payback

We chat to London-based photographer, James O Jenkins, who has been claiming royalties through Payback for the past few years. He reveals what he spent his last royalty on and shares some useful know-how for first-time applicants.

Can you tell us a bit about your work?

I’m a photographer who works under a few different guises. I work for a wide variety of clients and publications whilst concentrating on my own personal projects.

In 2013 I set up the Welsh photography collective, A Fine Beginning, which aims to showcase contemporary photography being made in Wales.

I’m also the co-founder of Portrait Salon, a Salon des RefusĂ©s for work rejected from the annual Taylor Wessing National Portrait Gallery Photographic Prize. The free online submissions for Portrait Salon 2014 open on Thursday 14 August.

What made you decide to sign up to Payback?

A friend told me about Payback and that you get paid in time for Christmas!

How did you spend last year’s Payback royalty?

Last year’s Payback royalty helped with my December-January trip to Vietnam.

What advice would you give to anyone signing up for the first time?

The first application is important to get correct and it’s also a good opportunity to look back and record how your work is being used. It’s also imperative to be as concise and accurate as possible with your application.

What do you have coming up that we should know about?

I currently have work being exhibited in ’Show Me The Money: The Image of Finance’ at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art.

On 28 August a joint exhibition called ‘Common Ground’ by A Fine Beginning and the Scottish collective, Document Scotland, opens at Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow.

And on 5 September 'A Fine Beginning: Made in Wales' opens at Oriel Colwyn Gallery - a group exhibition celebrating work featured on A Fine Beginning's blog.
