DACS artist Ibrahim El-Salahi is the subject of the UK’s first major show tracing the development of African Modernism - opening at London’s Tate Modern on Wednesday 3 July until 22 September 2013.
A visionary modernist
Ibrahim El-Salahi: A Visionary Modernist explores the Sudanese artist’s life and career, highlighting his leading role in the development of African and Arab Modernism and placing him in a global art history context.
Bringing together 100 artworks, it follows the development of his art over five decades across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
Key moments in El-Salahi’s life are observed, from his experiences as an art teacher in 1950s Sudan to self-discovery at London’s Slade School of Fine Art.
His return to Sudan signalled the beginning of a new modernist visual language, integrating his diverse influences which traversed African, Arabic and European artistic traditions and cultures.
The show follows El-Salahi to Qatar where he lived in the 1980s, and then finally his return to England, where he currently resides.
