DACS is looking after your data

As GDPR comes into force on 25 May 2018, we prepared a quick guide on what GDPR is, your new rights and how DACS is prepared to look after your data.

    What is the GDPR?

You may have heard about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a new law that affects all business in Europe, which comes into force on 25 May 2018.

The GDPR will replace the current UK Data Protection Act with a new high standard for protecting an individual’s personal data.

Just as we are committed to protecting artists’ rights, DACS takes your privacy very seriously as well so we have updated our policies and security measures to meet the high standard of data protection under the GDPR.

    Greater transparency in privacy policies

The GDPR requires DACS to inform you on what types of data we process and why. You’ll find all this information and more in the DACS and Artimage privacy policies.

Data we process includes information that allows us to communicate and work with you, whether that’s licensing an artwork, collecting and distributing royalties or campaigning to safeguard artists’ rights. Our updated policies also tell you how we handle sensitive personal data and the rare situations we would ask for it.

     Your rights

All individuals have new rights under the GDPR. These include:

    • The right to ask us for the information we hold on you
    • The right to correct any mistakes in your information
    • The right to change your preferences on how we contact you and on what topics
    • The right to restrict processing of your data or have it erased
Your rights and how you can exercise them are set out in our privacy policies.

    Keeping your data safe

In preparation for the launch of GDPR, we have been implementing new digital security features to help look after your data. We rely on software to carry out our work, but we only use software with known safety features that helps us safely process and transmit your data.

Updates have been made to our documentation such as our membership agreements, which will be submitted at our forthcoming AGM for approval in September.

We also have clear processes in place in the unlikely case of a security and data breach.

    We are GDPR ready!
