Students from Central Saint Martins curate an exhibition at DACS exploring the 'art selfie' phenomenon and the extension of the gallery space into social media. On show from 24 February to 3 March 2017.
Exploring the boundaries between originality and ownership
As part of a collaboration between DACS and
Central Saint Martins, students on the Culture, Criticism, and Curation BA were invited to pitch an exhibition idea on the theme of art and copyright – with the winning proposal realising their exhibition at our event space in Bethnal Green, east London.
The winning idea, #AnotherGallery, was developed and curated by Helene Jackson, Irini Khenkin, Anastasiia Noga, and Emily Takeuchi-Brown.
Featuring photography and video, it explores the changing dynamic of public interaction with museums and galleries on social media. It considers how the public engages with the gallery space, taking pictures, sharing content and in the process blurring the boundaries between originality and ownership.
Gilane Tawadros, DACS’ Chief Executive, said
“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Central Saint Martins and to be able to offer this practical learning opportunity to their students. We believe it is vital to educate creative industries students about copyright and provide them with the know-how to support their professional practice. With #AnotherGallery, the students have demonstrated in a compelling way their critical understanding and creative interpretation of the curatorial brief.”
