DACS celebrates Artimage’s first birthday

DACS is celebrating the one year anniversary of Artimage in June 2015. Dedicated to licensing images of modern and contemporary art, Artimage complements our Copyright Licensing service and supports the income of artists and estates.

Since Artimage launched in June 2014, the service has fast become a reliable digital resource for sourcing high quality images of artworks by artists represented by DACS for Copyright Licensing.

Over the past year the image collection has doubled in size and now features 10,000 images covering a variety of subjects, techniques, art movements and decades.

Copyright Licensing members who have joined the service in the past year include Jake and Dinos Chapman, Peter Doig, Gary Hume and the Estate of John Piper to name a few. In addition, Artimage now includes images by American artists such as Mark Rothko and Frank Stella, who are represented by DACS’ sister society, ARS.

Unlike other image providers, Artimage’s fees go back to artists and their estates, supporting their practice and livelihood. Image reproductions are also cleared by DACS’ Licensing team, ensuring our members’ artworks are respected.

Describing his motivations for joining Artimage, Hew Locke said: “DACS has helped me out a number of occasions, so I knew I could trust them to license images of my work through Artimage.”

Photographer Nicholas Sinclair said: ““I have always resisted placing my portraits with picture libraries because of the risk of the work being trivialised or misused. When I was introduced to Artimage however, and found out that it was committed to promoting modern and contemporary art, I liked the idea very much.”

Since launch, Artimage has licensed images for a range of projects, from the blockbuster film Kingsman: The Secret Service, to the Art Fund’s National Art Pass promotional campaign. Other clients have included the BBC, Christie’s, Harper’s Bazaar, National Galleries of Scotland, Royal Society of Chemistry, Tate, Thames and Hudson, The Times, Wingspan Productions, Yale University Press and many more.

We are now looking forward to the year ahead, which will see us develop Artimage to include the licensing of artists’ film. More details will be announced soon.
