A brand new free, annual visual arts festival, Art Licks Weekend, will launch on 4-6 October 2013 to celebrate London’s vibrant, emerging art scene.
Young galleries, artist-run spaces and small not-for-profit projects across East and South London will open to the public, with special free events and exhibitions featuring up-and-coming visual artists.
Over 70 spaces are taking part to exhibit work by over 250 emerging artists including Katie Schwab, Tom Railton and Lawrence Lek. Participating spaces include Banner Repeater, Legion TV and APT Gallery.
Alongside the main programme will also be an online digital art project with bubblebyte.org, Stop, Look, Listen! performance programme and the Workweek Prize, sponsored by Artquest, supporting risk-tasking projects in the festival.
When the eyes of the international art world so often gaze at central London, Art Licks Weekend 2013 will alternatively spotlight a thriving DIY scene outside the centre. This is being led by a number of young artists, curators and gallerists who, with little or no funding, have taken risks to build an infrastructure which supports their art. This network of individuals forms the future of the capital’s art scene.
More information about the festival will be announced later in July at www.artlicksweekend.com.
Art Licks Weekend is produced by Art Licks, a magazine and online platform providing a voice for the grassroots art scene in London. Funders of the event include Arts Council England and Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
