DACS interviews Annabel Tilly, fine artist and co-founder of arts development organisation Zeitgeist Art Projects. She tells us why she regularly claims royalties through our annual Payback scheme.
Can you tell us a bit about your work?
I am a practising artist and co-founder of
Zeitgeist Arts Projects (ZAP). As an artist I make work inspired by art history and museum collections. Since I graduated I've exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, as well as completed several residencies.
I founded the London-based arts organisation ZAP in 2012 with fellow artist, Rosalind Davis, to support artists through opportunities like exhibitions, artists talks, workshops and art tours. We have just completed another successful summer tour of the UK with ZAP's popular talk, 'The A-Z of Surviving as an Artist'.
What made you decide to sign up to Payback?
I saw an advert a few years ago in a-n magazine. It looked like a great opportunity but almost too good to be true - getting paid for reproductions of your work in magazines or publications with an ISBN number. But it was true and so simple to sign up, take part and reap the benefits.
How did you spend last year’s Payback royalty?
It always arrives as a bonus just before Christmas. Last year I was able to buy a digital projector with my royalties.
What advice would you give to anyone signing up for the first time?
It's very easy and you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. And the great thing is once you have filled in the online form, the information is retained until the following year, so all you have to ever do after your first application is just add in anything new. Make sure you keep all the publications, so you have a record and easy access to the ISBN number.
What do you have coming up that we should know about?
I am currently working on a drawing commission for Nottingham Castle. I'll also be curating a new group exhibition called 'ReCollage' at Standpoint Gallery, Hoxton with Rosalind Davis in London next year.
Things are busy at ZAP this Autumn too with art tours organised to visit the Folkstone Triennial and Liverpool Biennial. We have also just launched The Zeitgeist Open Exhibition for 2014 and selectors include Juan Bolivar and Andrew Bicks, as well as Rosalind Davis and myself.
