Every year we collect a share of royalties which we pay to eligible artists who've signed up to the scheme. It’s worth it - thousands of artists claiming in 2023 received a share of £5.2 million with individual payments of up to £367 for books and magazines and up to £2000 when also claiming for TV.

All kinds of visual artists benefit from Payback including photographers, fine artists, illustrators, sculptors and cartoonists to name a few.

Are you eligible?

• Are you a visual artist with copyright protected artworks, or their authorised representative, such as a picture library?
• Has your work ever appeared in a UK book, magazine or TV programme?
• Can you provide examples of where your work has been featured, with proof?

If you answer yes to all three questions, then you can apply for your share of Payback royalties. Please read our Frequently Asked Questions for full eligibility criteria.

How it works

1. We collect royalties for visual artists

   These come from various collective licensing schemes covering the secondary use of your images in UK publications and/or TV programmes.
   

2. Part 1 - Provide your ISBNs, ISSNs and URLs by the February deadline

   Maximise your royalties by providing details of where your work has been published.
   
   

3. Part 2 - provide your total number of works in books, magazines or on TV by the April deadline

   Provide your overall number of works published in UK books and magazines up until the end of the previous year. You can also claim for work featured on UK TV programmes broadcast in the previous year only.
   
   You need to submit Part 2 to complete your claim.
   
   

4. You receive your royalties

   We pay your royalties once a year in autumn, minus a small percentage to cover our costs.
